OS X Yosemite v10.10: FileMaker Server. Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server 10.5.1 (Intel-based Mac) FileMaker Server. Windows Server 2003. I have users.newsite.com hosted on Mac OS X 10.10.5 using Server version 5.0.15. I have A records setup in DNS so that both domain names (users.newsite.com and users.oldsite.com) point to the same IP address for the OS X Server machine. We have a wildcard SSL cert of.newsite.com and the cert is installed on the OS X Server machine.
You should try to upgrade another mac to OSX 10.11 El Capitan and buy OSX Server for that OS. Or Sierra for that matter.

That way, you purchased macOS Server.app 5 officially which should give you the right to download to an earlier version once you are booted into your Yosemite Server and go to the AppStore to download the server.app. Home recording studio.
I have done plenty of upgrades where the AppStore sees you are entitled to server version 5, but the OSX version is not compatible. It should then show you a warning that this new version is not compatible and the latest compatible version is being downloaded.
This specific route has worked for me, but you need to purchase the latest and greatest available version of the server.app so you are eligible for older version that way.

I have users set up to connect via smb to smb://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/folder two things I can see that are not working correctly.
1. In Server Admin-->Servers-->My Server.local-->SMB-->connections. The host names of the user mac's connected are wrong. It looks like they are picking up random PC's host names from our domain even though the Xserve is in a standalone configuration
2. One of the users on a mac (iMac 10.10) is seein excel files that he opens as 'Read Only' not sure why. He is also not able to add new folders via the finder or change the color (Label) of folders.
The Server is running 10.6.8
I wonder if In Server Admin-->Servers-->My Server.local-->SMB-->Share Points--> 'Others' should be set to fill permissions?
1. If your server is not providing DNS then you need to address this in your DNS configuration on the server(s) that provide it. You can also set the Computer Name and Local Host Name via scutil (see: man scutil in the Terminal), via Apple Remote Desktop remotely.
2. You need to use ACLs. Not even certain any longer how to do that with the GUI tools in 10.6.8 which is ancient and long-past overdue for upgrade or replacement, as it is not getting nor has it gotten any security updates in many years.

Permissions will NOT work as expected if you do not use ACLs. And one must use the command-line to ensure they propagate correctly, this was buggy in the GUI in 10.6 server.
